Are There Hotels in Sandbridge? Where to Stay Instead
The short answer is no. Sandbridge doesn't have hotels or motels. Almost everyone who visits stays in a rental home or a condo, and once you know how that works, it's an easy trip to plan.
Why there are no hotels here
Sandbridge is a small residential community on a barrier island at the south end of Virginia Beach. It's mostly houses, a handful of condo buildings, a few restaurants, and a lot of protected land, with Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge on one side and the Atlantic on the other. There's no commercial strip, which is a big part of why people love it.
If you search "Sandbridge hotels" on a booking site, you'll still see results. Look closely and they're usually rental homes listed alongside hotels, or hotels at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront, about 25 minutes north.
Your options for staying in Sandbridge
A rental house
This is how most people do Sandbridge. Houses range from cozy cottages to big homes with six or more bedrooms, and some have private pools. They're the natural choice for families and groups who want a kitchen, a deck, and enough room that nobody is sharing a bed with a cousin.
A condo
Sandbridge has a few condo buildings, usually with elevators and a shared pool. A condo is a good fit for a smaller family or a couple of friends who want something easy to manage, with less house to look after.
A hotel at the Oceanfront
If you really want a hotel, the closest ones are at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. You'll get front desk service and walkable restaurants, and you'll drive to Sandbridge for beach days. That works for a quick visit. For a longer stay, most people find the drive back and forth gets old.
Which one fits your trip
| Who's coming | What usually works best |
|---|---|
| A big family or a reunion | A large house, ideally with a pool and plenty of parking |
| A family with young kids | A house or condo with a pool and a short walk to the beach |
| A couple | A condo, or a hotel or condo at the Oceanfront if you want to walk to dinner |
| Bringing the dog | A pet friendly house (check the pet policy before you book) |
A few things hotel travelers don't expect
- There's usually no daily housekeeping. The home is cleaned before you arrive and after you leave.
- Ask what's included. Some rentals provide linens, towels, and beach gear, and some don't.
- Check the minimum stay. In summer, many homes rent for several nights or a full week.
- Count your cars. Many homes have a parking limit, so it's worth asking before everyone drives separately.
- Look at how far the house is from the beach. "Walk to the beach" can mean two minutes or ten.
- Read the house rules for guest limits and quiet hours, so there are no surprises.
